BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombia's government is fining U.S.-based Drummond Co. almost $3.6 million for dumping tons of coal into the ocean at a Caribbean port.
Environment Minister Luz Helena Sarmiento said in a news conference Thursday that the Alabama-based company must also clean up the beach near the resort city of Santa Marta where the spill took place almost a year ago amid rough weather.
Drummond is Colombia's second-biggest coal exporter. It didn't immediately comment on the decision.
