Chinese police detain executives of influential business publication amid extortion scandal

Chinese state media say police have detained the publisher and the general manager of an influential business publication.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Thursday that police detained Shen Hao, publisher of the 21st Century Business Herald, and general manager Chen Dongyang, but did not say what charges they might face.

It came weeks after police detained several editors and reporters for the publication's website on allegations that they extorted money from companies by threatening to publish negative news about them.

Corruption has plagued China's media industry, where extortions in exchange for cover-ups and paid news are common.

The financial publication is part of the influential Nanfang Media Group.
