Chinese fishing boat captain killed after clashing with South Korean coast guard
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Hospital officials say the captain of a Chinese fishing vessel was killed in a clash with the South Korean coast guard after his boat was stopped for suspected illegal fishing.
An emergency room worker at the Mokpo Hankook Hospital said Friday that the 45-year-old Chinese national died at around 11:10 a.m. about 30 minutes after he arrived by helicopter. The hospital did not immediately announce the cause of death.
Coast guard official Kim Hye-gyeong says a South Korean guardsman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun after he violently resisted the inspection. Kim says the victim's boat was 78 miles (125 kilometers) into South Korean waters near the island of Wangdeungdo when it was stopped.
