Car Bomb Kills Anti-Terror Chief in South Yemen

CAIRO -- A Yemeni security official says a car bomb has killed the regional head of the anti-terrorism police in the country's restive Abyan province.

The official said the bomb blast Friday near the southern city of Aden killed Ali Al-Haddi and wounded three others, two of them children.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

Security has broken down across Yemen during an eight-month popular uprising seeking to oust longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Al Qaeda linked militants have taken over a number of towns in Abyan, along the country's south coast, where they regularly engage in deadly clashes with security forces.

Yemeni authorities also accuse them of targeting security officials.
