Brazilian Inmates end uprising, free hostages

Officials say rebellious inmates in northeastern Brazil have released 131 hostages, ending an uprising that lasted 26 hours.

The Law Enforcement Department of the state of Sergipe says that the uprising ended Monday and that no one was hurt at the Advogado Antonio Jacinto Filho prison in the coastal city of Aracaju.

The hostages were mostly relatives who had come to see prisoners during visiting hours.

Tuesday's statement says the inmates agreed to end their rebellion after officials agreed to investigate complaints including alleged beatings by guards.

All of the prison's 470 inmates took part in the uprising.
