Lebanese security officials say an explosion in the southern city of Sidon has killed a local Palestinian official.

The officials said Tuesday's blast instantly killed a security official with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah group. The man was identified Fathi Zeidan, Fatah's security chief in the refugee camp of Mieh Mieh near Sidon.

The officials said the blast destroyed a car and that security forces have cordoned off the area. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

The explosion occurred near the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh, where Fatah gunmen have recently clashed with Islamic extremists. Ein El-Hilweh is the largest of 12 refugee camps in Lebanon. The tiny Arab country is home to some 400,000 Palestinians.
