Officials at Berlin's Holocaust memorial say experts are looking into what has caused cracks in many of its concrete slabs and how to repair them.

German daily Bild reported Tuesday that cold weather in the last two years has caused damage to most of the 2,711 slabs that form the 5-year-old memorial.

A spokeswoman for the memorial near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate wouldn't say how many of the slabs are damaged but says experts are trying to determine whether the cracks are caused by the frigid weather.

Felizitas Borzym says the foundation fixed 50 slabs with resin in 2008 and is still evaluating the method.

The huge field of concrete is one of Berlin's top tourist destinations. More than 8 million people have visited since it opened in 2005.
