Belgian police find 7 tons of marijuana in coconut cargo

Published January 13, 2015

Authorities in Belgium have intercepted a record amount of marijuana in two separate seizures – one involving 7 tons of the drug hidden in a shipment of coconuts originating from Africa.

"This is a record seizure by customs working with the police," the government reportedly said in a statement concerning the two hauls.

Agence France-Presse reports the first seizure involving the coconuts occurred last week at the town of Ypres, located in the western area of the country, near the French border.

Officials say that shipment, stuffed into a cargo container, possessed an estimated street value of 14 million Euros, or approximately $19 million.

Later, authorities discovered a second, large shipment of cannabis, also hidden in a cargo container, at Belgium's mega-port of Antwerp, according to Agence France-Presse.

Authorities are reportedly yet to peg the value of that cargo, as its origin is still unknown.
