Police say at least 20 people have been killed when a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a restaurant in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Scores of people were injured when the roof of the building caved in with the force of the explosion Saturday in Petlawad town.

An officer in the Petlawad police control room said 20 bodies were pulled out of the debris and rescue workers are searching for survivors.

The restaurant located near the town's bus station was crowded when the blast occurred.

Petlawad is about 310 kilometers (190 miles) west of the state capital, Bhopal.
