Algeria's military reports it has killed seven armed militants in two separate operations in a mountainous region east of the capital.

In the first operation Tuesday, soldiers ambushed and killed four militants near the regional capital of Tizi Ouzou, 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of Algiers.

The military says three other militants were killed in Boumerdes 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the capital in another operation.

Weapons and ammunition were recovered in each attack, Wednesday's statement added.

On Monday night, militants attacked a supply truck with a homemade mortar, killing two security agents in the Boumerdes region.

It's unclear which group the alleged militants belonged to, but Algeria's once-powerful branch of al-Qaida has largely been restricted to small-scale activity in this mountainous region near the capital.
