An Afghan official say at least two people have been killed in a car bomb explosion near a police station in the capital of southern Kandahar province.

Samim Khpalwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, says the explosion happened Tuesday morning in the capital, also called Kandahar.

Qayyum Pokhla, the head of Kandahar's regional hospital, says he had received two bodies along with another 15 people wounded in the attack.

He says the wounded included both civilians and military personnel. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kandahar is the heartland of the Taliban insurgents and the city was the capital of the extremists' 1996-2001 regime. Attacks on Afghan soldiers and police have intensified in recent weeks as the insurgents mount their annual warm weather offensive.
