Taiwan's official news agency says five inmates have taken a deputy warden and several other people hostage at a prison in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.

Central News Agency said Wednesday that the inmates were suspected to be armed although no gunshots were heard at Kaohsiung Prison. It says two people might be injured but gives no further detail.

CNA says the reason for the hostage taking is unclear but police are investigating.
