The mayor of the northern Mexico border city of Mexicali says 15 elderly residents of a nursing home have died in a fire at the facility.

Mayor Jaime Diaz Ochoa says another five people were being treated at a local hospital for burns, and were in serious condition.

The fire broke out at the nonprofit facility early Tuesday. The facility is located in a rural area about a half-hour's drive outside Mexicali.

Diaz Ochoa said 23 residents had been taken to a temporary city shelter.

Local media reported the facility housed formerly homeless elderly people.
