Birmingham police were investigating a shooting in which four children younger than 13 were shot and a woman was killed.

Lt. Sean Edwards told local media the shooting occurred Wednesday evening at a North Birmingham house. Police have confirmed that a woman in her mid-30s was killed.

Four children were also shot. They were taken to a hospital and are still alive. One of the children, a 12-year-old, has life-threatening injuries.

Edwards said investigators believe the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic disturbance.

Police are searching for a suspect believed to be the woman's boyfriend.
