Utah man nabbed in high-speed chase tells police he planned to kill Claire McCaskill

A Utah man who was arrested Wednesday after a high-speed chase reportedly told law enforcement officers he was driving to Missouri to kill former Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill "if she wasn’t dead already.”

George William Stahl, 36, had been driving 130 mph and faster in snowy conditions, according to The Associated Press.

Stahl was charged with making threats of terrorism, reckless driving, speeding, failing to stop at the command of police officers, DUI and drug possession, a probable cause affidavit cited by The Deseret News revealed.

 The Cottonwood Heights resident was first spotted by a Utah Highway Patrol officer who tracked him traveling at 115 mph about 12:45 a.m. GMT on Wednesday.

Although the trooper turned on emergency lights and sirens to get Stahl to pull over, troopers were eventually forced to spike Stahl's tires. He was traveling at about 135 mph when his wheels were punctured.

“Stahl was belligerent and appeared heavily intoxicated," the affidavit read. "He smelled of an alcoholic beverage and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot. There was an empty 12-pack of Budweiser beer in his vehicle as well as a partially consumed other 12-pack. Stahl stated that he was on Adderall and LSD and beer."

Before being booked at the Summit County Jail, Stahl was brought to the North Summit Fire Station for medical evaluation.

McCaskill, a two-term senator, lost her seat in the 2018 midterm election to Republican Josh Hawley. 

Since then, she has become a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC.

“Obviously, this is not the first time there have been threats, and that is never good,” McCaskill told The Associated Press in a statement. “But the political temperature is very high right now, which makes it concerning.”
