Police in Buffalo say a masked robber is in the hospital after a pizza delivery man shot at a gang of would-be thieves.

Police tell local media outlets that the delivery man brought a pizza to a house around 10:30 p.m. Monday and was met in the front hallway by a man wearing a mask and hoodie. The masked man hit the pizza man on the head with a hammer and displayed what appeared to be a gun.

Police say the delivery man pulled out his own properly registered gun and fired, wounding the masked man. The other thieves took off.

Police say 18-year-old DeJuan Coleman is recovering from wounds to the upper arm and abdomen. He's charged with first-degree robbery. Police didn't know if he has a lawyer.

The pizza delivery man, who was not named by police for safety reasons, suffered head cuts and an injury to his left hand in the robbery attempt, The Buffalo News reported.
