HARTFORD, Conn. – A key witness has testified that a Connecticut woman paid him $5,000 in 2012 to kill her ex-husband during a child custody dispute that police said had millions of dollars at stake.
Tiffany Stevens of Bloomfield went on trial Tuesday in Hartford Superior Court. She has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.
The witness, John McDaid of Granville, Massachusetts, testified he didn't follow through on the hit and revealed the plot to Stevens' ex-husband, Eric Stevens, who told Simsbury police.
A Simsbury police officer testified that he learned during the investigation that whoever got custody of the Stevens' daughter would control a trust fund said to be worth $50 million.
The custody case is pending. Tiffany Stevens still has custody of her daughter and is free on $1 million bail.
