The Latest on a fatal police shooting in New York City (all times local):

8:45 p.m.

An official says a New York City police officer has been shot and killed and another officer was wounded while responding to an armed robbery.

The government official, who was briefed on the matter, tells The Associated Press the slain officer was a detective. The official was not authorized to speak on the matter and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

It happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday at a cellphone store in the Richmond Hill section of Queens.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is at the hospital. The condition of the wounded officer wasn't immediately known.

New York City police say two officers have been shot during an apparent armed robbery.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at a store in the Richmond Hill section of Queens.

The officers' condition weren't immediately known. Mayor Bill de Blasio is at the hospital.

Police tweeted that people should expect a police presence and heavy traffic and that they should avoid the area.

In December, a police officer on Staten Island was hit by friendly fire as officers responding to a domestic dispute call shot and killed a man carrying a knife.
