The eyes have it: Woman chased, bitten by raccoon

It started with "a pair of eyes." It ended with an Alameda woman screaming and her dog barking after a raccoon bit her, puncturing her leg. The Oakland Tribune reported 33-year-old Rachel Campos de Ivanov was walking her 20-pound Yorkshire terrier at about 11 p.m. Sunday when she spotted the eyes near a fence around a baseball diamond at Washington Park. Next thing she knew, a raccoon was walking toward them, then she saw four more descending from the trees.

Campos de Ivanov tried to get away, but tripped. That's when one of the raccoons sunk its teeth into her leg as she tried to protect her face.

She'll undergo rabies treatment for several weeks.

Meantime, Alameda County Vector Control is investigating the attack — the seventh reported since June.
