Teen convicted in Ohio mall shooting that left robbery accomplice dead gets 2 years in prison

A teenager who tried to steal Air Jordan sneakers from a mall shopper who fatally shot another teen with him has been sentenced to two years in prison.

The 17-year-old was sentenced Tuesday on adult convictions of reckless homicide and grand theft involving a Dec. 20 fatal shooting outside the Dayton Mall.

Defense attorney L. Patrick Mulligan had asked for community control instead of prison. He said Tuesday that the teen didn't have a gun or cause the death and had no prior record.

Police said three boys accosted two shoppers leaving the mall after buying a new version of the popular Nike shoes on sale that day. Authorities say the 16-year-old showed a gun and was fatally shot by a shopper who had a concealed weapon permit.
