Somerset Hoax Home Invasion Draws Repayment Order

A Somerset woman who prompted a massive police response when she claimed an intruder broke into her home and shot her, when she had actually accidentally shot herself, has been ordered to pay restitution to the town.

A judge on Thursday ordered Jennifer Smith to repay Somerset nearly $10,000 related to the manhunt for a non-existent assailant and continue with mental health treatment.

The Herald News (http://bit.ly/pgZ4zH ) reports that the case was continued without a finding for one year. Smith was charged with obstructing a criminal investigation and making a false crime report.

The 34-year-old Smith, married to a Fall River officer, told police in December 2009 that an intruder broke into her home, wrestled her gun from her, and then shot her before fleeing.

About 50 police officers responded.
