Some schools rethink using playground equipment as authorities investigate 9-year-old's death

Some schools are pulling equipment off the playground as authorities try to determine why a 9-year-old Oklahoma girl died after falling off a teeter-totter-like structure.

Fourth-grader Alyssa Avila of Wyandotte died last week after falling from the device called an X-Wave, then hitting her head. Her exact cause of death is still being investigated.

But several schools around Oklahoma say the episode has made them rethink having the set and similar equipment in their schoolyards. Officials in at least six school districts have removed them or prohibited children from playing on them.

Xccent Inc., which makes the X-Wave, says it won't discuss its products or how many have been sold to schools across the country until authorities give an official cause of death.
