VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) — Five workers were injured when scaffolding collapsed Wednesday at a five-story dormitory under construction at Binghamton University.

A section of the scaffold fell about 60 feet to the ground at Delaware Hall, part of the East Campus Housing project, campus police spokeswoman Gail Glover said. The cause is under investigation.

One of four workers taken to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City was in critical condition; the other three were stable, the hospital said. A fifth worker was listed in stable condition at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.

Jennifer Miglioratti, a spokeswoman for contractor LeChase Construction of Rochester, said federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials were headed to the scene.

Delaware Hall is one of three five-story, 400-bed dormitory buildings being erected at an estimated cost of $68 million. The university is in the middle of a $93 million project to upgrade or replace aging buildings.
