BUTTE, Mont. – Butte-Silver Bow law officers arrested a registered sex offender after discovering he was babysitting a 3-year-old.
Authorities say the child showed no signs of abuse.
Sheriff John Walsh says 59-year-old Michael Mattix was arrested just before 11 a.m. Thursday after someone called police concerned about the small child playing around a vehicle. Walsh says Mattix had the child in his vehicle while he was working doing some landscaping.
Walsh tells KTVM-TV that Mattix was arrested on suspicion of a parole violation.
Mattix was sentenced in 1981 for rape and is a Level 2 registered sex offender, meaning an evaluation found him at moderate risk to reoffend.
Authorities say the girl's family apparently hired Mattix to babysit not knowing he was a registered sex offender.
