JOLIET, Ill. – Prosecutors have rested their case at former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson's murder trial.
They wrapped up Monday after calling more than 30 witnesses to support allegations that Peterson killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004.
Their witnesses included investigators, pathologists and Savio's friends. But they offered no physical evidence and relied heavily on hearsay as they built a wholly circumstantial case.
Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, didn't feature prominently. Drew Peterson was only charged in Savio's death after Stacy Peterson went missing in 2007.
One witness talked about how Drew Peterson told Stacy Peterson to lie to police. But prosecutors couldn't mention she'd vanished or that her husband is a suspect in her disappearance.
Peterson pleaded not guilty and faces a maximum 60-year prison sentence if convicted.
