WASHINGTON, Pa. – Authorities have continued to search for leads in the fatal mugging of a western Pennsylvania college football player.
Timothy McNerney was a running back for Washington & Jefferson College, about 20 miles from Pittsburgh, when he and a friend were mugged coming home from an off-campus bar early Thursday.
The friend got away and called for help, saying up to six men had attacked him and McNerney, a 21-year-old senior who graduated from Knoch High School in Butler County.
McNerney was later found unresponsive near the robbery site about 4 a.m. and pronounced dead a short time later a hospital.
Other students say they've been targeted for random violence in the past, but Washington police say they've not received any such reports.
The Washington County coroner has ruled the death a homicide.
