Police say officers checking on a possible break-in at a southwestern Virginia home shot a man who confronted them with a gun.

Wytheville police said in a news release that a woman called police early Wednesday when she came home to find a window open. While officers checked the home, police say they were confronted by a 59-year-old white man brandishing a firearm.

It was not immediately clear why the man was at the home.

Police say officers shot the man several times and performed first aid on him. He was eventually flown to a Tennessee hospital. Police didn't release his condition or the races of the officers.

Virginia State Police are investigating.

Calls to Wytheville and state police were not immediately returned.
