Police are trying to determine if there's a link between a man arrested after he allegedly broke into an apartment in Placerville and tried to kidnap a toddler, and the killing of an 8-year-old girl about 45 miles away in Calaveras County.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/18lVptq ) police arrested 44-year-old Jason Wryrynen after getting a call around 8 a.m. Tuesday that he had entered the apartment and tried to take a 15-month-old girl from her mother.

The newspaper says Wryrynen had tried to take the girl by force, but that the mother was able to wrestle her daughter away and struggled with Wryrynen until police arrived.

Placerville police Capt. Mike Scott says there is "no confirmed nexus to the Calaveras County case" but Placerville officers are in communication with Calaveras County law enforcement officials.

A DNA sample also has been collected from Wryrynen.
