SAVANNAH, Ga. – Perjury charges have been added against two former sheriff's deputies facing trial in the death of a Savannah jail detainee.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1K8tG1w) new indictments Wednesday charge Cpl. Jason Kenny and Cpl. Maxine Evans with lying to a grand jury about the death of 21-year-old Mathew Ajibade (ah-jih-BAH-dee).
Kenny and Evans already face an Oct. 5 trial on involuntary manslaughter charges.
Ajibade died at the Chatham County jail after fighting with deputies Jan. 1. Prosecutors say Kenny shocked Ajibade with a stun gun while he was strapped in a restraining chair. Evans and jail nurse Gregory Brown, also charged with manslaughter, are accused of failing to check on Ajibade and falsifying paperwork to say they did.
Attorneys for the ex-deputies did not immediately return phone calls.
