Police in Ohio responding to a false report of a home invasion found two alligators at the residence, the Mansfield News Journal reported Saturday.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department received a report of a home invasion in Lexington, Ohio -- about 60 miles north of Columbus -- at around 9:30 p.m. Friday, Deputy Donald Zehner said.

Shortly afterward, a man called dispatchers and said he was "just playing a joke" to scare his girlfriend.

However, when officers arrived on the scene and searched the home, they found two alligators in an upstairs room and a woman who indicated that she "absolutely did not want them in the house," Zehner said.

The alligators were 2 to 3 feet in length. Their jaws were taped by deputies and they were taken to the Richland County Humane Society late Friday.

The man who called in the false home invasion report could face charges, including inducing panic or disorderly conduct, the report said.
