    Northwest Airlines Plane Mystery

A Northwest Airlines jet carrying 144 passengers and 5 crew overshot its destination at the airport in Minneapolis by 150 miles on October 21, 2009, before the pilots realized their mistake and turned the Airbus A320 plane around. Air traffic controllers on the ground couldn't reach them for more than an hour and feared the worst: a hijacking. The crew says they were in the middle of a heated discussion about workplace policy and got distracted, but investigators are looking into whether they may have fallen asleep. Both the captain and co-captain have been suspended pending the outcome of the probe.

  • Pilot Speaks Out
Pilot Richard Cole of the Northwest Airlines jet that missed its destination by 150 miles says there was no disagreement in the cockpit, neither he nor the captain was napping and the passengers were never in any danger. "We were not asleep; we were not having an argument; we were not having a fight," Cole told the AP. Photo: Fox News Channel
