A 52-year-old North Las Vegas man was sentenced to 26 to 65 years in state prison for a machete attack that split his ex-girlfriend's scalp and nearly hacked off her arms in March 2012.

Armando Vergara-Martinez apologized in Spanish during sentencing Thursday in Clark County District Court.

A jury found Vergara-Martinez guilty in February of attempted murder and two other felonies in the attack on Maria Del Carmen Gomez.

Vergara-Martinez testified at trial that he was so drunk that he had no memory of attacking Gomez outside a North Las Vegas convenience store.

Gomez survived the attack. Surgeons repaired her scalp and reattached her hands, and she spent several months as an advocate for tougher laws against domestic violence.

She died six months later from unrelated cancer. She was 53.
