Residents in Fargo, North Dakota, held their breath Sunday after a weeklong preparation and miles of sandbags and clay dikes were expected to hold back the bloated Red River at its crest.

Schoolchildren, parents and hundreds of residents spent days packing and stacking sandbags to protect their cities against the rising Red River.
