North Charleston officer shoots, wounds suspect who cut deputy serving a warrant, police say

CHARLESTON, S.C. – North Charleston officials say a police officer has shot and wounded a suspect who cut a sheriff's deputy as officers were trying to serve a warrant.

A statement from the Charleston County Sheriff's Office says four North Charleston officers and two sheriff's deputies tried to serve a burglary warrant on 43-year-old James Anthony Cooper in suburban Charleston late Wednesday.

Authorities say the suspect's wife answered the door saying Cooper was upstairs. The statement says that when officers approached the suspect, he ran at them with a knife or another sharp object.

A deputy suffered a minor cut on his cheek and thumb. An officer then shot Cooper.

He is being treated at the Medical University of South Carolina for an abdominal wound. There was no immediate word on his condition.
