LOS ANGELES – A new prison photo of the 77-year-old cult leader Charles Manson emerged Thursday just before his next scheduled parole hearing at the state prison in Corcoran, Calif.
The picture, which was taken last June, shows Manson with long grey hair and a beard. He has a faded swastika toward the center of his forehead and appears expressionless. The buzz cut he had in his last picture is gone.
Back in 1969, Manson led the group known as the Manson Family, which murdered eight people, including film director Roman Polanski's pregnant wife Sharon Tate.
Susan Atkins was one of Manson's ersatz hippie "family" of young killers who burst into a Beverly Hills home 39 years ago and killed Tate along with four others. The following night they stabbed to death a wealthy couple in their Los Angeles home.
He is serving a life sentence for his role as the convicted ringleader in the gruesome murders. Manson is scheduled for his 12th parole hearing next week.
Three of his followers also are serving life sentences. A fourth, Susan Atkins, died in prison in 2009.
