Nebraska Abortion Doctor Plans Expansion Elsewhere

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. -- A Nebraska doctor says he plans to open new clinics in other states to ensure he can continue performing late-term abortions after his state banned abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Dr. LeRoy Carhart says he wants to open new clinics near Washington D.C. and in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He also wants to expand operations at his existing Bellevue, Neb. clinic and a clinic in Indianapolis to offer other reproductive medical treatments.

He says late-term abortions would be offered at the D.C.-area and Iowa clinics.

Carhart has proposed several plans to expand his practice since the shooting death of his friend and fellow late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in 2009.

Nebraska's new law bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on the idea of fetal pain.
