Opera star Renee Fleming is returning to her western New York roots to conduct master classes and lessons at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

Eastman officials announced Thursday that the renowned soprano has been appointed distinguished visiting artist. Fleming received a master of music degree at Eastman.

In addition to conducting classes and coaching sessions, she'll give talks and presentations for students starting in the fall semester.

The four-time Grammy Award winner grew up in the Rochester suburb of Chili (CHY'-leye).

Fleming has performed around the world and serenaded Queen Elizabeth and President Barack Obama, who earlier this year awarded Fleming the National Medal of Arts.

Fleming is performing in New Zealand on Saturday before returning to the U.S. for a concert Wednesday in New York City.
