Maine state police say a man who had a history of getting drunk and lying on the road was killed when he was struck by a truck.

Troopers say 44-year-old Bert Knox, of Carthage, was lying on a road at 5 a.m. Wednesday when he was run over. He died instantly.

Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says troopers were told that Knox had passed out on the roadway "a number of times in the past."

The motorist told investigators he could not avoid striking what he thought was a dead animal in the road. He was not injured. No charges will be filed.
