HOOVER, Ala. – Authorities say an Iraq war veteran has been killed while he was leaving his central Alabama home for an early morning workout.
Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector tells local news outlets that 33-year-old Jonathan Michael "Mike" Gilotti encountered someone either in his driveway or his car Tuesday and was fatally shot once.
Rector says authorities are investigating at least 10 car break-ins overnight in the same neighborhood, a suburb south of Birmingham. He says Gilotti may have stumbled upon the robber while leaving for the gym.
Rector confirmed Gilotti, a native of Avon, Connecticut, was an Iraq war veteran, a husband and a father of two sons. He served as a U.S. Army tank commander, first lieutenant and platoon leader in the 12th Cavalry Regiment.
