An agent for ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations was shot Tuesday morning in Texas while conducting surveillance in a criminal investigation, a spokeswoman from the agency said.

The shooting occurred in Hidalgo County, Texas, which is near the Mexican border and a known drug-trafficking route.

The agent, identified as Kelton Harrison, is listed in stable condition at a nearby hospital.

Harrison, 32, had undergone surgery for two gunshot wounds to the abdomen, the spokeswoman said. He was shot shortly before 4 a.m. while driving off road in an unmarked SUV.

A reporter for The Monitor said Harrison was placed in an ambulance and rushed to the McAllen Medical Center at speeds of up to 100 mph.

The scene was described as a remote and brushy area and was packed with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and an investigation is ongoing, the report said.

Authorities believe that there were possibly two shooters involved and have recovered shell casings.

Texas state troopers blocked several miles of the main road through Hargill. At one end, investigators with metal detectors walked through tall grass around a small white house. Officers from local, state and federal agencies scoured the road for several miles to the north of the house, looking for discarded shell casings and other evidence.

At the north end of the crime scene, an SUV with its rear window broken out sat about 50 yards off the road behind a row of squat trees. Border Patrol agents and other investigators picked their way through grass nearby.

FBI spokesman Erik Vasys said his agency is leading the investigation into the assault on a federal officer, but that any details regarding the incident would likely come from ICE.
