Former Atlanta officer charged in shooting appears in court

A former Atlanta police officer charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man made his first appearance in court.

James Burns faces charges of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of his oath of office in connection with the June 22 shooting of 22-year-old Deravis Caine Rogers as he drove away.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/2a3QKXx) Burns appeared before a judge Monday for a formal reading of the charges. He turned himself in Saturday, a day after prosecutors announced arrest warrants had been issued.

The newspaper reports that Burns will remain in jail at least until a preliminary hearing on Aug. 1.

Atlanta police Chief George Turner fired Burns on July 1 after an internal investigation determined Burns used unnecessary and excessive force.
