Florida religion professor resigns after voyeurism sentence

A University of Florida religion professor has resigned after being sentenced to five years of probation on video voyeurism charges.

The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/1TPtuMo ) reports 54-year-old Manuel Arturo Vasquez was sentenced in April following his arrest last October. Officials say he secretly recorded a teenage family member by placing a USB recording device in her closet.

Court records show Vasquez pleaded no contest to one count of video voyeurism. He was ordered to receive counseling for at least 30 months.

Vasquez had been at the University of Florida since 1994. He was the chair of the university's interdisciplinary Program for Immigration, Religion and Social Change.

UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes says his last official day was May 1. He'd been on paid leave since his arrest.
