Police say Wilkes was on a street corner with a pistol and rifle and fired on officers Saturday night. Gaston County Assistant Police Chief Joseph Ramey says Wilkes was killed when several officers fired back.
The officers' injuries aren't life-threatening. Their names or races have not been released. It's not clear what race Wilkes was.
Police refused to release more details Monday.
