  • Fallen heroes: Meet some of the law enforcement officers killed by gunfire in 2016

  • Georgia Southwestern State University campus police officer Jody Smith (left) and Americus, Ga. police Officer Nicholas Smarr (right) were shot and killed on Dec. 7 while responding to a domestic violence incident at an apartment complex. The suspect fled the scene but was found dead the next day following a SWAT raid of a local residence.
  • Tacoma, Washington, Police Officer Jake Gutierrez was gunned down on Nov. 30 after responding to a domestic disturbance. The shooter barricaded himself inside the home and used two young children as human shields for several hours. He was eventually killed by a Pierce County Sheriff's Office SWAT sniper.
  • Wayne State University police officer Collin Rose was shot in the head while on patrol near campus in Detroit on Nov. 22, 2016. He died a day later. The subject fled the scene and remains at large.
  • San Antonio, TX, Detective Benjamin Marconi was shot and killed on Nov. 20 as he conducted a traffic stop. The subject fled in his vehicle but was later arrested by members of San Antonio Police Department SWAT team.
  • U.S. Deputy Marshal Patrick Carothers was gunned down on Nov. 18, while attempting to arrest a suspect in Long County, Georgia.
  • Stanislaus County, CA, Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Wallace was gunned down on Nov. 13 at Fox Grove Park, in Hughson, while investigating a suspicious vehicle. The suspect was arrested in Tulare County a few hours later.
  • Canonsburg, PA, Police Officer Scott Bashioum was gunned down on Nov. 10 as he and his partner responded to a domestic disturbance. The subject who shot them then committed suicide inside the home after murdering his pregnant wife.
  • Show Low, AZ, Police Department Officer Darrin Reed was gunned down on Nov. 8 in a confrontation with a suspect at a motel. The gunman later died in a separate confrontation with police.
  • Peach County, GA, Sheriff’s Deputies Daryl Smallwood (left) and Sgt. Patrick Sondron (right) were shot on Nov. 6 near Byron, GA, and died of injuries sustained when they responded to a report of a confrontation between neighbors.
  • New York City Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo was shot in the head and chest during a violent exchange on Nov. 4 with a man who had just held his estranged wife and her family hostage for hours. Also shot and injured in the confrontation was NYPD Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo.
  • Sgt. Anthony Beminio, left, of the Des Moines, IA, Police Department and Officer Justin Martin of the Urbandale police were killed in related attacks a few miles apart on Nov. 2. Both were ambushed while sitting in their patrol cars by the same gun-wielding attacker, who surrendered to police.
  • Deputy Sheriff Dan Glaze of the Rusk County, WI, Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed on Oct. 29 while investigating a suspicious vehicle. The suspect was arrested soon afterward.
  • Sgt. Allen Brandt of the Fairbanks, Alaska, Police Department succumbed on Oct. 28 to complications caused by gunshot wounds sustained shortly after midnight on Oct. 16 while responding to a report of shots being fired. The suspect was arrested two days later and charged with murder, assault, vehicle theft, theft and tampering with evidence.
  • Modoc County, CA, Deputy Sheriff Jack Hopkins was fatally shot on Oct. 19 while responding to a disturbance call. The suspected gunman was taken into custody.
  • Puerto Rico Police Department Sgt. Luis Meléndez-Maldonado was gunned down on Oct. 12 while conducting a narcotics trafficking investigation with other officers at a public housing complex in Humacao. Three men opened fire on the law enforcement agents, and Meléndez-Maldonado was shot. All three were taken into custody. It’s believed that the group had gone to the complex to murder a rival drug dealer.
  • Palm Springs, California, officers José Gilbert Vega (left), 63, and Lesley Zerebny, 27, were shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance. The suspect, an admitted gang member named John Felix who was wearing body armor, was talking to the officers through a metal grate when he opened fire on them with an assault rifle loaded with hollow point bullets. A third officer was injured in the firefight. Felix was taken into custody by members of the Riverside County Sheriff's Office SWAT team.
  • St. Louis County, Missouri, Officer Blake Snyder, 33, was shot and killed on Oct. 6 while responding to a disturbance. Authorities identified the suspect as 18-year-old Trenton Forster, who was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
  • Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Steve Owen was shot and killed on Oct. 5 after responding to a burglary in progress in Lancaster, CA. The suspect fled into a nearby home where he took two teenagers hostage for several hours. As a SWAT team entered the apartment, the man fled but was quickly apprehended.
  • Sgt. Kenneth Steil of the Detroit Police Department died of gunshot wounds sustained on Sept. 12, while chasing a subject who had just attempted to carjack a vehicle. The suspect, Marquise Cromer, 21, was charged with first-degree murder. Steil was awarded the rank of captain posthumously.
  • Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby, North Carolina, Police Department died Sept. 12 of gunshot wounds sustained two days earlier while attempting to arrest a man wanted for armed robbery and kidnapping. The 23-year-old suspect was captured four days later in Rhode Island, where he is being held pending extradition.
  • Alamogordo, N.M., Police Officer Clint Corvinus, 33, was shot during a foot pursuit of Joseph Moreno, 28, on Sept. 2. Despite being shot, Corvinus shot and killed Moreno, who was declared dead at the scene. Corvinus died in the hospital the next morning.
  • Maryville, TN, Police Department Officer Kenny Moats, 32, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic violence call with a Blount County Sheriff's Office deputy on Aug. 25. Brian Keith Stalans, 44, shot Moats in the neck, just above his bullet-resistant vest. Authorities believe the call was a ruse to lure officers to Stalans’ home so he could kill them. He now could face the death penalty for Moats’ murder.
  • Eastman, GA, Police Officer Tim Smith was shot and killed while responding to reports of a man carrying a firearm the night of Aug. 13. The suspect, 24-year-old Royheem Delshawn Deeds, was caught in Florida, hiding in the trunk of his sister’s car.
  • Sebastian County, Arkansas, Sheriff’s Office Corporal Bill Cooper was shot in the neck and killed on Aug. 10 when he and other officers responded to a domestic violence call involving an armed man that turned into an ambush. An officer from the Hackett Police Department was injured in the hours-long standoff, which ended with the suspected gunman surrendering.
  • Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agent De'Greaun Frazier was shot and killed while conducting an undercover narcotics operation in Jackson the afternoon of Aug. 9. He was in a car with an informant and a third man, who tried to rob the other two and shot Frazier. He was captured shortly afterward, half a mile from the scene.
  • San Diego Police Officer J.D. DeGuzman and his partner, Wade Irwin, were conducting a routine stop on July 28. Jesse Gomez, 52, is accused of shooting Irwin in the neck as he was getting out of the patrol car, then shooting DeGuzman in the driver’s seat multiple times. Irwin shot the gunman and called for assistance, and Gomez was apprehended in a nearby ravine. DeGuzman died from his wounds, while Irwin survived after weeks in the hospital.
  • Kansas City, KS, Captain Dave Melton was shot and killed on July 19 while trying to capture a fleeing man who was sought in connection to a drive-by shooting. Melton attempted to block his path with his squad car, but 20-year-old Jamaal Lewis allegedly opened fire before the officer could get out of the car. He was arrested 20 minutes later.
  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Police Department Corporal Montrell Jackson, was shot and killed outside of a convenience store by Gavin Long, along with Officer Matthew Gerald and East Baton Rouge Deputy Sheriff Brad Garafola (see next slide) on July 17. Long, a Missouri resident who traveled to Baton Rouge looking to kill cops, injured three other officers before being killed in the firefight.
  • East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Deputy Sheriff Brad Garafola (left) and Baton Rouge Police Department Officer Matthew Gerald (right) were shot and killed, along with Baton Rouge Corporal Montrell Jackson, by Gavin Long on July 17.
  • Berrien County, MI, Courthouse security supervisor Joe Zangaro, 61 (pictured above) was killed along with bailiff Ronald Kienzle, 63, after an inmate disarmed an officer and began shooting in the courthouse on July 11. A sheriff’s deputy and a civilian were also wounded in the melee, which ended when the inmate was shot and killed.
  • July 7, 2016, was the deadliest day for law enforcement personnel since Sept. 11, 2001. During a protest over police shootings of unarmed black men, Micah Johnson killed five Dallas officers, wounded nine others along with two civilians before he was killed by a police explosive. Among the officers killed were, from left, Dallas Police Officer Michael Krol, Sr. Cpl. Lorne Ahrens and Sgt. Michael Smith.
  • July 7, 2016, was the deadliest day for law enforcement personnel since Sept. 11, 2001. During a protest over police shootings of unarmed black men, Micah Johnson killed five Dallas officers, wounded nine others along with two civilians before he was killed by a police explosive. Among the officers killed were, from left, Dallas Area Rapid Transit Officer Brent Thompson and Dallas Police Department Officer Patrick Zamarripa.
  • On June 22, Jefferson Parish (LA) Sheriff’s Deputy David F. Michel Jr. was shot and killed while attempting to search a 19-year-old black man in Harvey, across the river from New Orleans. According to police, the teen spun around, the two began a scuffle that ended with Michel being shot three times. The teen has been charged with first-degree murder.
  • Auburn, MA, Police Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., 42, was killed during a traffic stop on May 22. Jorge Zambrano, 35, sped away after shooting the father of three multiple times, according to reports. He was cornered by police nearby and killed after a shootout that left another officer wounded.
  • Police Officer David Glasser succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day after responding to a burglary in progress at a home near the intersection of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road.
  • Kansas City, KS, Detective Brad Lancaster was shot and killed on May 9 while assisting patrol officers in pursuit of a suspicious person who had fled a local casino. He was shot twice and died in the hospital. The suspect, a recent parolee, carjacked a vehicle and was tracked down and shot by police that afternoon. He survived.
  • On April 12, Columbus, Ohio, SWAT Officer Steven Smith succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained two days earlier during a standoff that occurred after officers attempted to serve a warrant on a man suspected of arson. The 27-year veteran of the force was shot while sitting in the turret of a police armored vehicle.
  • Virginia State Trooper Chad Dermyer, 37, of the counterterrorism unit, was shot and killed during a training session at the Greyhound bus terminal in Richmond. He exchanged words with James Brown III, who pulled a gun from his waistband and shot Dermyer multiple times. Brown was killed by police at the scene; no motive is known.
  • Howard County, IN, Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Koontz was shot fatally on March 20, as he and other officers attempted to execute arrest and search warrants in connection to a narcotics case. Evan Dorsey, 25, was hiding in a locked bedroom when he opened fire at the officers, striking Koontz in the pelvis and a second deputy in the buttocks. Dorsey shot himself to prevent arrest, while Koontz died in the hospital.
  • Greenville, S.C., Police Officer Allen Lee Jacobs was shot multiple times as he and other officers attempted to interview a teen believed to be in a gang. The subject fled on foot and shot at Jacobs while fleeing, striking him several times. According to officials, the teen shot himself as police were closing in on him.
  • Euless, TX, Police Officer David Hofer was shot and killed on March 1 while responding to a report of suspicious activity at a park in the Fort Worth suburb. Hofer was speaking to a 22-year-old lying in wait in a creek bed with a shotgun, rifle and handgun. He shot Hofer in the face, according to police accounts, before being killed by the other officers present.
  • Prince William County, VA, Police Officer Ashley Guindon, 28, was shot and killed on Feb. 27, her first day on the job, while responding to a domestic disturbance. A U.S. Army sergeant stands accused of killing his wife after a day-long dispute, then gunning down Guindon and injuring two other officers.
  • Park County, CO, Sheriff’s Office Corporal Nate Carrigan was shot and killed on Feb. 24 as he and other deputies attempted to serve a “high-risk eviction order” on Martin Wirth that resulted in a shootout in which at least 72 shots were fired. Carrigan and Wirth were both killed, and two other deputies were hospitalized with serious wounds.
  • On Feb. 11, Major Greg Barney of the Riverdale, GA, Police Department was assisting Clayton County police officers carry out a search warrant when Jerand Ross fled the scene. As officers pursued him, Ross shot and killed Barney, moments before being shot himself. Ross never recovered from his injury and died 2 months later.
  • A domestic disturbance call in Fargo, N.D., led to an all-night standoff on Feb. 10-11, and the deaths of two men: Officer Jason Moszer, 33, and Marcus Schumacher, who had barricaded himself in his home. Moszer was shot fatally as he tried to position himself in a side alley. Schumacher was shot by a police sniper.
  • Harford County, MD, Senior Deputies Patrick Dailey (left) and Mark Logsdon were shot and killed by David Evans, 68, in Abingdon on Feb. 10. Dailey approached Evans, who had outstanding warrants against him, in a restaurant. Without warning, Evans shot the deputy in the head and fled out the back. Before being shot and killed by officers, he shot Logsdon as well.
  • Mesa County, AZ, Sheriff’s Deputy Derek Geer approached a teenage runaway, Austin Holzer, on Feb. 5. Holzer became uncooperative and Geer Tasered him. Holzer pulled a gun out of his pocket and shot the deputy in the face. Three days later, Geer was taken off life support; Holzer faces 10 adult charges, including first-degree murder.
  • Seaside, OR, police Sgt. Jason Goodding was shot and killed on Feb. 5 as he and another officer attempted to capture an unco-operative 55-year-old man. Phillip Ferry was Tased by the other officer, and, when Goodding attempted to restrain him, pulled out a gun and shot the sergeant. The other officer returned fire, and both Godding and Ferry died while receiving treatment for their wounds.
  • Officer Doug Barney of the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake was shot and killed on Jan. 17 in Holladay, Utah. Responding to a traffic accident, the 18-year veteran arrived to find a man fleeing from the scene. As Barney approached him, 31-year-old Cory Lee Henderson shot the officer in the head. He wounded a second policeman before being shot and killed.
