Colorado man struck after jumping from police car

Colorado authorities say a 20-year-old man being taken to jail has been seriously injured after he jumped out of a police car going 60 mph and got hit by another car.

Colorado Springs police tell The Gazette newspaper that John Winkler was handcuffed when he jumped out of the police car Tuesday.

They say the Colorado Springs man opened the front passenger door, jumped out, recovered from his fall and was running across Interstate 25 when he was hit.

Police say Winkler's injuries are life-threatening. Authorities say Winkler had been arrested on two felony warrants.

Police Sgt. Steve Noblitt says the unmarked police car didn't have secured back doors like police cruisers so Winkler was riding in the front passenger seat. A second officer was in the back seat.
