Authorities say a Cincinnati policeman has been shot and critically injured after gunfire erupted between officers and an armed person reported to be behaving erratically.

Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell says both the officer and the suspect were reported in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital after the Friday shooting. Blackwell tells reporters that officers were dispatched to the Madisonville neighborhood shortly after 9 a.m. after receiving a 911 call.

Blackwell says multiple shots were fired between the suspect and responding officers. But he declined to provide additional details on the shooting while the investigation continues.

Blackwell says he believes the suspect was on the street when officers arrived.

The officer and the suspect weren't identified. The chief says the officer was wearing body armor.
