Charity behind star-powered Sandy concert is funding disaster relief on a human scale
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The charity in charge of distributing donations from the nationally televised Superstorm Sandy relief concert has been thinking small when it comes to doling out more than $50 million.
More than 160 organizations have gotten shares of the Sandy relief funds collected so far by the Robin Hood Foundation.
Many have been the type of small, grass-roots groups that were everywhere on the devastated New York and New Jersey coasts in the initial weeks after the storm.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}A church in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., got $25,000 so it could install showers and beds for volunteers. The Mennonite Disaster Service in Pennsylvania got $150,000 to dispatch home builders to New York City.
The concert was held Dec. 12 and included such stars as Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones.
