Charges yet to be filed in fatal street race; relatives say driver likely tried winning money

Charges have yet to be filed after three people were killed in a crash during an illegal street race in rural western Alabama that left nine others injured.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Senior Trooper Reginal King said in an email Monday that charges hadn't been filed against 22-year-old Maurice Wedgeworth in the crash from Saturday. A second driver was taken into custody in Huntsville but his identity has not yet been released.

Wedgeworth's relatives said Monday that street races aren't uncommon in rural Greene County and the unemployed father of four may have been hoping to win some money.

Authorities have said 30-year-old Rodney Hutton, 22-year-old Jalesa Kiara Merritt and 3-year-old Jhayden Pippen died after being hit, and three children, ages 6, 7 and 9 were also injured.
