    Cases of Chelsea King, Amber Dubois

    The deaths of the two teens stirred strong emotions in San Diego and across the nation because the accused killer served five years of a six-year-sentence for molesting a 13-year-old neighbor in 2000.

    Chelsea King disappeared Feb. 25, last seen in a park with running clothes. The case sparked a search involving about 1,500 law enforcement officials and thousands of volunteers. It ended five days later when a body was found in a shallow lakeside grave. Amber Dubois, 14, was walking to school when she vanished a year ago just 10 miles north of the site where Chelsea was last seen. John Albert Gardner III pleaded guilty to raping and murdering both Chelsea and Amber Dubois in a plea agreement that called for life in prison and he would reveal details about how they vanished and died.

    Chelsea King, a straight-A, college-bound student, disappeared on a run Feb. 25 in a San Diego park. Gardner admitted in court that he attacked her and dragged her to a remote area where he raped and strangled her within an hour. He buried her in a shallow, lakeside grave.

    Amber Dubois vanished walking to school on Feb. 13, 2009, about 10 miles from where Chelsea King was last seen in running clothes at a park. She was last seen walking with a man about 200 yards from Escondido High School by a woman who used to drive her to middle school, according to her father.  John Albert Gardner III led authorities to Amber's bones on condition that prosecutors couldn't use that information against him.

    April 16: John Gardner pleads guilty to both counts of murder  in San Diego Superior Court. Sex offender John Albert Gardner has pleaded guilty to killing two San Diego County teenage girls. Gardner agreed Friday to enter the pleas in the deaths of 14-year-old Amber Dubois and 17-year-old Chelsea King. In exchange, prosecutors will not seek the death penalty.
