Nearly seventeen years ago, 20-year-old Joseph Anthony Anguiano was fatally shot in the front yard of his southern California home.

Now police have reportedly employed DNA evidence to crack the longstanding cold case and finally apprehend a suspect in Anguiano’s murder.

CBS Los Angeles reports the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Friday announced the arrest of Gabriel Ralph Bencomo, 35, in Riverside.

The murder occurred on Aug. 4, 1996 in Rancho Cucamonga, when Benecomo was 19 years old. He is reportedly being held in lieu of a $1 million bond at the West Valley Detention Center and is scheduled to be arraigned, Monday.

“Detectives investigated the homicide in 1996 and developed numerous leads,” Detective Jerry Davenport said in a statement, according to CBS. “But the homicide investigation remained unsolved.”

The San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Cold Case Team reportedly reopened its investigation in 2010.
